Dark Paint in Small Spaces

Yesterday, we showed you a change we made to our powder room. We went from greige walls to a DARK paint, despite the room being very small! While most people ave been conditioned to think that dark paint makes a room look smaller, we actually argue the opposite!

Most people would say that white or light walls reflect the most light and make the space feel bigger. In some cases, this is certainly true. Buy, the fact is, a dark color can do the same thing! Instead of reflecting more light, it reflects less- and in turn, the depth of its color and shadows blurs the edges of the room. By absorbing the light, the walls of the room are less clearly marked and can give the illusion of MORE space. Dark paint also often allows for natural light to fill the space and bounce off of the walls to create reflection, and therefore, more light!

While it is no secret that I love the aesthetic of light and bright spaces (ex: nearly my whole house), theres just something about a good dark and moody look that can make the right room come to life. Simply painting this powder room gave it so much more style, sophistication, and character. It went from boring and average, to a point of interest. Our home is full or original wood moldings- an there is just something I LOVE about the combination of dark walls and wood trim. It’s rich and masculine, yet classy and timeless. When you’re thinking of darker paint, don’t just think small. Think authoritative, bold, and classic. And always remember… it’s just paint!

This year, I have been playing more and more with dark paint colors. This is the third space we went dark in this home, and I love each one. Take a look at the darker spaces in our home. We used Sherwin Willians Iron Ore in each one of these spaces. It’s a personal favorite! If you’re looking for other dark paint choices, here’s some popular options!
